At least thirteen people killed and 98 injured in train derailment in Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and execution of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.

The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this accident,” affirmed the country's president.

The leader confirmed that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The official added plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Major Initiative of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the immediate past president, whose presidency concluded the prior year. This venture was closely associated with his government's economic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another massive train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The construction of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a notable expansion of its role in civilian infrastructure. They were completed at an rapid rate, surpassing forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also fueled significant concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This encompasses an earlier accident this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the tragedy, the chief of a key rival party urged an urgent halt in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This halt was requested pending a full independent investigation. The party declared that the situation "requires immediate answers."

In response, the president insisted that the train had been functioning in full compliance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and management of these vital projects.
